passionate cricketers

Experience the thrilling journey of a legendary cricket club as we take you back to the origins of Tenambit-Morpeth Cricket Club. It all began when two clubs, East Maitland United and Morpeth Cricket Club, merged under the watchful eyes of the District Association, igniting a new era of cricket excellence.

Picture the year 1965, where a group of passionate cricketers led by the indomitable Mr. Rex Bergin gathered for the first-ever annual meeting of East Maitland United Cricket Club, later fondly known as EMU. Determined to make a mark, they christened their new club East Maitland United (EMU) and embarked on a remarkable inaugural season. With unwavering enthusiasm, EMU transformed the Hunter River Hotel into its home base, leveraging its facilities to host vibrant social events and thrilling raffles. As the seasons unfurled, the club experienced an unprecedented surge in player numbers, rapidly ascending to become one of the powerhouse clubs in the district.

In a monumental turn of events, 1979 saw EMU being offered the prestigious Tenambit Oval as its new hallowed ground. With overwhelming excitement, the club embraced this opportunity, prompting a name change to reflect its fresh identity as Tenambit Cricket Club. The stage was set for a thrilling chapter in the club’s history.

engaged in fierce battles

Cast your gaze to the past, where EMU and Morpeth engaged in fierce battles and thrilling finals before 1979. These two mighty clubs dominated 2nd Grade, challenging each other relentlessly in an era when fielding three district sides wasn’t a compulsory rule. Yet fate had a different plan in mind, and in 1981/82, Morpeth Cricket Club sought to elevate its status to 1st grade. The esteemed Maitland District Cricket Association, recognizing the potential of both Tenambit and Morpeth, decided to unite them, maintaining the balance between the two tiers of district and club cricket. And thus, the birth of a new cricketing force emerged, known as Tenambit-Morpeth Cricket Club.

grand gesture of solidarity

In a grand gesture of solidarity, Morpeth Oval assumed its rightful place as the club’s main home ground. The pages of history reveal that the united Tenambit-Morpeth clinched their maiden First grade premiership in 1981/82, triumphantly defeating Weston Workers. In an extraordinary feat, they also secured the coveted District Club Championship across all grades. The birth of a new cricketing dynasty had arrived.

Since then, Tenambit-Morpeth Cricket Club has continued its relentless pursuit of glory, consistently claiming the prestigious District Club Championship, thanks to its exceptional pool of talented players. The club’s triumphs reverberate through the years, with Major Premiership victories in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade. Rarely has our beloved club missed out on an annual District or Club Title since its inception since 1965, firmly establishing ourself’s as a powerhouse in the cricketing realm.
